Information for Graduate Student Members

The National Association for Ethnic Studies recognizes the value of its graduate student members, both as contributors to the organization and as the future of the discipline. We therefore encourage graduate student involvement in several ways.

  • Discounted membership dues. Please see our current membership form for information.
  • Discounted conference registration. We also sponsor a roommate matching service for our conference.
  • Your gender, and your smoking preference and any special needs you may have. We then will put you in touch with someone who fits your preferences. Arrangements beyond the match are the participant's responsibility.
  • Student paper competitions for underegraduate and graduate students at each year's conference.
  • Conference travel assistance. The Board of Directors is currently working to develop a funding base and disbursement procedures for small financial awards to graduate students attending our annual conference. This is a work in progress.
  • Opportunities for presentation and publication. Unlike some other academic organizations, we try to be informal and friendly while upholding high standards of scholarship. Graduate students are encouraged to submit proposals for our annual conference and to submit papers to our journal.
  • A seat on the Board of Directors reserved exclusively for a graduate student. For more information about running for either the graduate student seat (two-year tterm) or a regular Board seat (four-year term) please contact the current Nominations Committee chair.
